Recycle Week 2016 put back after referendum clash

The national Recycle Now campaign has postponed its annual Recycle Week after its original date clashed with that of the EU referendum.

The week, which this year will encourage residents to think about recycling items from around the home under the theme of ‘Unusual Suspects’, will now take place from 12-18 September, having originally been scheduled for June.

A statement released by Recycle Now said: ‘We’ve consulted with a number of our partners and stakeholders and they agree that the intensity of activity around the EU referendum may have an impact on the success of a Recycle Week in June.’

Details of events and programmes at this year’s Recycle Week have yet to be released, but last year the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), which runs the Recycle Now brand, released a refreshed set of materials for local authorities, retailers, brands, schools, businesses and community groups.

Updates on events and activities being organised for Recycle Week 2016 can be received by signing up at the WRAP website.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
