RWM Director Stephen Gee moves to UBM

Stephen Gee, Director of the waste and resource industry’s largest annual event RWM, has left his role to join competitor event and communications firm UBM plc.

Having worked as Event Director of the Resource Efficiency and Waste Management Solutions event (RWM) for i2i Events Group Ltd since 2012 (and having worked on RWM since 2008), Gee has now become Event Director at international communications, event and marketing services company, UBM plc.

Headquartered in London, the event branch of the company manages several events in the UK, including the annual sustainable construction event, Ecobuild and Architect of the Year.

Speaking of his departure, Gee said: “After 4.5 enjoyable and successful years on RWM it was time to move on to my next challenge. I can confirm I have joined UBM who run the Ecobuild event held in March at Excel in London.”

Gee tweeted on Thursday (29 August) that he had had a “great first week in a new job”, and that it was “all very exciting”. However, he has said that ‘at this stage’ he is unable to divulge any further details about his new role.

Gee’s move comes just days before the 2013 event of RWM in partnership with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), which will be held at the Birmingham NEC between 10-13 September.

Portfolio Director for Environment Events at i2i events, Dan Thurlow has temporarily replaced Gee as Event Director of RWM.

He said: “Following four years with i2i Events Group, Steve Gee has moved to pursue a new role and we wish him well. The team at RWM, and our partners the CIWM, are looking forward to a strong event - doors open on 10th September with pre-registration figures well ahead of expectations and a content programme stronger than ever.

“The event account managers have already been sharing plans for 2014 with some of our largest and most loyal supporters and the response has been unanimously positive, leading to some early confirmed bookings for next year.

“As Portfolio Director for all of the environment events at i2i, I am closely involved with every aspect of the show and am confident this will be the best show yet. Team changes are common-place in the events industry and we will appoint a new event director as soon as we find a suitable candidate.”

CIWM Chief Executive Steve Lee added: “RWM is the high profile showcase that reflects the importance of our dynamic and growing sector. With just a few days to go until the doors open, the 2013 show looks set to be stronger than ever, with a record number of exhibitors and an unrivalled free conference programme. CIWM and i2i will continue to build on this successful partnership to deliver the exciting plans we have for the future."

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
