Waste container manufacturer Storm Environmental has unveiled its latest product: a lightweight but heavy-duty steel waste container lid.The galvanised steel lid can be bought with Storm’s 1,100-litre and 1,280-litre waste containers. It has smooth edges to prevent user injury and is comparable in weight to Storm’s plastic lid. The steel lid will also contain any waste fires by starving the fire of oxygen. All of Storm’s steel products undergo a hot dip galvanizing process to extend the life of the steel and prevent it from rusting.Furthermore, the steel lid is robust enough that vermin cannot chew through it. With the option to add a lock to the lid, unwanted break-ins are also prevented.Customers also have the option of choosing the colour of the lid powder coating, adding RFID tagging, lifting points and customised printed graphics and logos.Sales Director Archie Logan says “The new steel lid is a game changer in our industry. We have invested a lot of time and money into research and development to launch the first steel lid bin manufactured in the UK, and our innovative manufacturing capabilities have allowed a number of unique benefits to surface.”

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
