Metal recycling and sorting specialist STEINERT will be opening its new test and development centre in Pulheim, near Cologne, in a live show on 22 September 2020.

The new centre will treble STEINERT’s testing capacity, allowing it to be more flexible in responding to customer demands.

STEINERT, which has been in operation for over 130 years, specialises in versatile sorting machines that can adapt to a range of sorting takes to find and sort resources, leading STEINERT to dub them ‘Resource Search Engines’.

The online opening show will begin at 10am CET on 22 September with a 90-minute live show, which will be shown again at 5pm CET in English. The event will be interactive, allowing participants to get involved at various points, including Q&A sessions.

The event will feature a presenter who will interview STEINERT experts and will provide an overview of the sorting technology installed at the centre.

The live show will be followed by an online webinar titled ‘How to separate non-ferrous metals and sorting heavy metals to the maximum’, which will answer questions about separating non-ferrous metals from shredder processes and incineration bottom ash, improving aluminium quality and separating heavy metals from individual fractions.

By the end of the year, STEINERT will have installed additional sorting lines for mining and waste recycling so that it can better fulfill its aim to provide customers with a ‘test before you buy’ experience and improve extraction, purity and profitability for each sorting task.

“The processing sequence deployed in the sorting systems is the same as that used in a real industrial plant. We are delighted that even more customers can try out our technology, from magnetic separators to sensor-based sorting systems, such as x-ray transmission, x-ray fluorescence and near-infrared (NIR),” says Peter Funke, CEO of the STEINERT Group.

STEINERT’s research and development team will also be moving to the new Pulheim centre, located eight kilometres away from the STEINERT headquarters in Cologne.

Those interested in registering for the live show can register via the STEINERT website.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
