Southbound Brewing Co. adopts Novelis evercan

Savannah-based craft brewing company Southbound Brewing Co. has announced that it is now packaging its beer in aluminium cans made from ‘the world's first certified high-recycled content aluminium can sheet’, evercan™.

Produced by aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis to lower the carbon footprint of consumer packaging, the evercan body sheet contains a ‘minimum’ of 90 per cent recycled aluminium (compared to an industry average of 50 per cent).

Southbound Brewing Company, Savannah’s first production microbrewery, has announced that it will now can its year-round brews, Hop’lin IPA and Scattered Sun Belgian Wit, in evercan. Both brews will be available in evercan on store shelves in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, starting this week.

Switching to evercan ‘the right thing to do’

Speaking of the decision, Carly Wiggins, Director of Marketing and Sales at the Southbound Brewing Company, said: “We founded Southbound to bring the innovation and excitement of the American craft beer revolution to Savannah and the Southeast. When we learned about evercan, the industry’s only low-carbon, certified high-recycled content packaging, we knew we had to make the switch – for the sustainability of our brewery and our local community. It was the right thing to do.”

Southbound has become the latest US-based brewer to adopt evercan, after the Red Hare Brewing Company and Red Brick Brewing Company took up the packaging for their year-round offerings.

Bruce Maclane, Director of evercan Craft Brew Sales for Novelis, commented: “Craft breweries are the new leaders and innovators in the beverage industry, and their double-digit market growth shows that their unique approach and deep connection with consumers is working.

"Southbound is one of those leaders, and its customers are responding positively not only to its beer, but also to its brand and what it stands for."

Introduced in 2014, Novelis's evercan is available to beverage companies globally.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
