Waste composition consultancy, Resource Futures, is partnering with waste management technology firm, Dsposal, to advance the use of data intelligence in the waste and resources sector.

The collaboration will see the two companies combining resources, beginning with a four-person Dsposal team joining Resource Futures on a six-month secondment.

Resource Futures and Dsposal have worked together on a number of occasions over the past few years. Current projects include developing a waste data modelling tool for ReLondon and updating the Monitoring and Evaluation tool used across Resource Futures’ community work.

Sophie Walker, co-founder and CEO at Dsposal, discussed the goals of the collaboration: “We’ve built a strong relationship with Resource Futures based on shared values. As a mission driven company, we believe we can really maximise our positive impact by combining our technical expertise with the deep industry knowledge of the Resource Futures team and we’re all excited about what we can achieve together.”

Sam Reeve, CEO of Resource Futures, added: “Just as data is becoming an increasingly powerful enabler in working towards a cleaner, less wasteful society, data innovation and intelligence plays an increasingly crucial part of the work we do at Resource Futures.

“This data gathering expertise is a perfect complement to the technical innovation we will be developing with Sophie, Tom and the rest of the Dsposal team.”

The partnership comes after the announcement of Resource Futures’ recent rebrand, which emphasises its focus on consultancy, communities, and data.

Reeve commented on the new direction of the company: “The way we work is evolving, the type of projects we’re taking on is evolving, and the people and skills we have across the company are evolving too.

“Today, we present a new look and feel for Resource Futures, backed by the dedication, expertise and engagement our clients and partners have grown to trust in our team.”

In November, Resource Futures took over management of Recofloor, the UK’s national commercial waste vinyl collection scheme.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
