Palestine will acquire its first Energy-from-Waste (EfW) plant from 2022, with an international tender to design, build, own and operate the plant won by Amsterdam Waste Environmental Consultancy and Technology (AWECT).

AWECT, part of the Northern Consortium, will develop the plant using the same technology used to build the AEB facility in Amsterdam, which has generated 900 kWh of electricity from each tonne of waste and processed over 5.5 million tonnes of waste since 2008.
The Palestinian facility is planned to built at the current Zahrat Al Finjan landfill site near Jenin and is expected to process 1,200 tonnes of residual municipal solid waste a day.
As a next step, the Palestinian Government and the Northern Consortium will meet to advance the plans, with construction expected to begin in 2022.
The facility will have a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) and a 25-year waste concession.
Evert Lichtenbelt, CEO at AWECT, said: “There is scope for significant GHG reduction in Palestine through the use of WtE technology.
“As the first plant of this type in the region, the new facility will reduce emissions by a colossal 400,000 tonnes each year, following its completion.”
