Coca-Cola opens first European retail flagship store in London

Coca-Cola Great Britain has launched a new flagship store in London today (28 April), to offer sustainable apparel and accessories made from recycled plastic.
Collaborations with UK-based and global designers will also be featured in store, including Herschel and BAPE.
Last year, Coca Cola Great Britain and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) announced its transition to 100 per cent recycled plastic in all on-the-go bottles of 500ml or less. The company also announced its transition from plastic shrink wrap to cardboard packaging across all multipacks.
Michelle Moorehead, Vice President of Licensing and Retail, The Coca-Cola Company said: "We have opened the doors in London to our first new concept store in Europe. This store is a chance for us to provide Coca-Cola fans with a premium array of fashion and collectibles, and fresh ways to experience our drinks.
“Through a collection of products made from recycled materials, it also gives us a great opportunity to share our sustainability commitments with people and bring them with us on our journey to a World Without Waste."
Covanta announces standalone ‘Waste-to-Energy Platform’
US energy-from-waste (EfW) specialist, Covanta, and EQT Infrastructure have unveiled a joint plan to develop a standalone Waste-to-Energy Platform in Europe. It is intended the separate platform will meet a ‘growing demand for sustainable waste infrastructure’.
Covanta’s European development includes three EfW facilities, which are currently operating in the UK, Ireland and Italy. As well as this, are three UK facilities under construction in Leicestershire, Cheshire and Grangemouth.
The separation of Covanta US and Covanta Europe is predicted by the company to ‘enable further value creation’.
Azeez Mohammed, President and CEO at Covanta, said: “The division of Covanta into two exclusive geographical sets presents us with an incredible opportunity to focus on market growth in the respective regions.
“In North America, we now look ahead to expanding our new sustainable waste solution service offerings and enhanced operations of our assets, such as metals recovery and Covanta Environmental Solution business lines. I commend the team at Covanta Europe for their efforts in expanding waste infrastructure overseas and look forward to their continued collaboration in the ensuing months.”
Owen Michaelson, President and CEO of Covanta Europe, added: “Covanta Europe appreciates the efforts of the broader team at Covanta and EQT for laying the groundwork for this technologically advanced platform, which is a key enabler of sustainable non-recyclable waste and materials processing in alignment with the waste hierarchy. We are excited to further support the transition to a circular economy in Europe as a standalone platform.”
BMRA donates £20,000 to Royal British Legion
The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) has donated £20,000 from the proceeds of a charity raffle and donations from its membership, to the Royal British Legion.
The President of the BMRA makes an annual donation to the charity of their choice from the money raised by raffles and auctions which are held throughout the year at the Association’s events.
After an extended period of COVID-19 restrictions, the BMRA held its first face to face event in two years – the Annual Dinner at the Royal Lancaster in London, which took place on 19 November 2021.
Susie Burrage, President of the BMRA said: "Our members are always incredibly generous with their donations, be it the donation of prizes or raffle entry. Last year they didn't disappoint. I selected the Royal British Legion as 2021 was its centenary year. My maternal Grandfather, John Glover, a veteran of D-Day WW2, instilled in me from an early age to never forget those who have actively served to protect our country and to always wear a poppy with pride.
"We were delighted that some members gave additional donations, even giving their photography competition prizes to the chosen charity instead."
Lucy Acred, Community Fundraiser Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon, Royal British Legion added: "We are overwhelmed with such a wonderfully kind donation from British Metals Recycling Association. Due to their generosity we can continue to provide support and care to the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in so many ways, such as information and advice on care and independent living, physical and mental wellbeing, and financial and employment support.
“We can continue to ensure that the Armed Forces Community can access the support they need. Thank you so much to everyone at British Metals Recycling Association for their fundraising efforts throughout the year, their wonderful donation and their support to the Armed Forces Community.”
Ms Acred continued: "We really need volunteers throughout Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon for the Poppy Appeal 2022, if you can gift some time to help with the collections in the supermarkets, can help deliver or collect poppies and collecting tins we would love to hear from you, there are so many ways in which you can help."

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
