Bryson Recycling ‘£1 a tonne’ initiative donates £6,482 to Belfast hospice
Northern Irish recycling provider Bryson Recycling has raised £6,482 for the rebuilding of the NI Hospice at Somerton House in Belfast, following its ‘£1 a tonne’ campaign.
As the name suggests, for every tonne recycled through Bryson’s weekly kerbside box collection (which covers around 170,000 homes across the area), £1 is donated to a local charity. The company has now been running the annual initiative for ten years and this year raised £6,842 for the charity.- enough to cover 215 bricks for the rebuld project.
The new hospice will be a state-of-the-art 18-room facility and will provide end-of-life care for terminally ill adults and their families.
Eric Randall, Director of Bryson Recycling, commented: “We want to thank all householders in Northern Ireland for contributing towards this year’s special campaign with NI Hospice as they continue to provide specialist hospice care for people with a terminal illness and their families in communities across Northern Ireland.”
Ellen Hillen, Corporate Fundraising Manager from the NI Hospice, added: “We are delighted with the valuable support received from Bryson Recycling. Every penny from the ‘£1 a tonne’ campaign donated will allow us to progress with the rebuild and provide much needed specialist nursing care."

Bristol ‘Energy Tree’ installation to be unveiled on Tuesday
The Energy Tree, an installation marking Bristol’s year as European Green Capital, is to be switched on at a launch event on Tuesday (21 April).
A partnership project between artist John Packer and educational energy consultants Demand Energy Equality, the 15-foot installation will challenge passers-by to a bespoke energy quiz as well as allowing them to tap into its own Wi-Fi connection and recharge their mobile phones using the energy derived from the tree’s solar panel leaves.
The tree will be unveiled in its location outside the At-Bristol centre in the city’s Millenium Square. It has been built entirely by the people of Bristol, with the solar panels leaves built from scratch by volunteers from the Bristol Drugs Project.
The event will run from 5.30pm and will include speeches from Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson, CEO of At-Bristol Phil Winfield, CEO of the Bristol Drug Project Maggie Teller, Packer, and Daniel Quiggin of Demand Energy Equality.

New centrifuge will improve Wolverhampton SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT plant efficency
The new installation of a CDEnviro centrifuge at SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT’s (formerly SITA UK) Wolverhampton facility will reportedly increase the volume of silt that can be processed at the plant and help clients achieve their recycling targets, the equipment manufacturer has stated.
The site at Neachells Lane, Wolverhampton, has been processing road sweepings and gully waste using CDEnviro treatment processes since it was installed in 2012.
Alongside the centrifuge, a new CO:FLO filter unit will improve water cleanliness and reduce chemical contaminants found in the clean water stream at recycling plants. Following a trial period the unit was found to improve the cleanliness of the waste stream by between 300 and 400 per cent.
SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has also invested in the CDEnviro Preventative Maintenance programme, which will ensure the plant is performing to optimum levels in all areas.
Commenting on the new equipment, Fergal Campbell, CustomCare Manager at CDEnviro said: “Through a close working relationship, it was identified that further efficiencies could be achieved by replacing the filter press with a centrifuge.
“The introduction of the centrifuge allows the plant to more efficiently deal with the higher silt contents and cope with the variability in the feed material.”

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
