Keenan Recycling Ltd signs up to the Resource Sector Commitment
Annie Kane | 22 September 2014

Organics recycling firm Keenan Recycling Ltd has become the latest Scottish company to sign up to Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Sector Commitment.

First launched in April 2013, the Scottish Government-backed initiative aims to set consistent standards for business waste collections and to help deliver the country’s zero waste targets.

Introduced ahead of the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which made it compulsory for all businesses to separate materials for recycling, the commitment complements the launch of the government’s Resource Efficient Scotland programme, designed to help organisations save money through reducing waste.

Resource management service providers, such as local authorities, private- and third-sector resource management businesses and relevant associations and trade bodies, that sign up to the commitment agree to:

  • provide customers with ‘high-quality’ recycling services;
  • give advice on preventing waste and using resources efficiently;
  • have ‘user-friendly’ contracts and charging structures; and
  • enable customers to give feedback

Commitment is a ‘seal of quality’

Speaking of the decision to sign up to the commitment, Managing Director of Keenan Recycling Ltd Grant Keenan (pictured, right, with ZWS Director Iain Gulland at RWM in partnership with CIWM last week), said: “We signed up to the Resource Sector Commitment primarily to demonstrate our commitment to excellence in the waste management sector.

“We found the sign-up process simple and straightforward and well worth doing. Becoming a signatory lets everybody know that we’re committed to excellence in our arena, and anything that gives you a head start in business is a good idea.”

Gulland added: “Zero Waste Scotland is delighted to welcome Keenan Recycling as our latest signatory to the Resource Sector Commitment, showing their determination to provide excellent customer service, and it’s great we were able to announce this news at the biggest event in the resource management calendar, RWM.

“Signing up to the commitment is a great way for organisations to show their customers and stakeholders that they are operating at the highest level of customer service. It’s a seal of quality that gives providers and contractors who are committed to excellence a way of standing out from their competitors and peers, and to gain recognition for their efforts to support the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan.”

A video detailing the Resource Sector Commitment, featuring Keenan Recycling, has also been released today (22 September).

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
