The Resource Association (RA), a trade association for the reprocessing and recycling industries and their supply chain, has announced Jonathan Short, Founder and Deputy Chairman of ECO Plastics, as its new Chairman.
Short was elected to the post by the board at the RA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held last week (24 April) in Birmingham. He replaces the founding Chairman, Andy Doran, Senior Manager for Sustainability & Recycling Development at Novelis Europe, who stepped down after three years in the role. The RA has said that Doran will remain an ‘active member of the board’.
Two new board members were also elected at the AGM: Managing Director of Closed Loop Recycling, Chris Dow, and DS Smith Business Development Manager, Peter Clayson.
Simon Weston, Managing Director of Smurfit Kappa Recycling, and Simon Walker, Head of RCP Sales at UPM Shotton, both retired from their positions on the board.
‘Offering leadership for the reprocessing and recycling sectors’
Newly-elected Chairman Jonathan Short said: “I am delighted to gain the support of my association colleagues in taking up the Chairmanship of the Resource Association. Having been involved as one of the early members three years ago and seeing the organisation flourish under Andy Doran’s leadership, I look forward to carrying on his good work and supporting Ray Georgeson and the team in continuing to offer leadership for the reprocessing and recycling sectors and the wide supply chain interests that support our mission.
“I’d also like to welcome new board members Chris Dow and Peter Clayson and thank Simon Walker for his service over the past year and look forward to his continued involvement.”
Outgoing Chairman Andy Doran added: “It has been a great honour to lead and help develop the Association and I have enjoyed my time as Chair tremendously, working with a very active board and membership, Ray and the growing team.
“I felt it was a good time to step down and hand on the baton for good governance reasons as well as other work demands upon my time, but I remain fully supportive and looking forward to continuing my active support as a Board member. I wish Jonathan every success in the post.”
He extended his thanks to Simon Weston, who stepped down from the board, saying: “His three years of service, including the time involved in the development of the association pre-launch has been exemplary and he will be deeply missed, but I look forward to his continued support as a valued member.”
The Board for 2014/15 now stands as follows:

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
