Since it was established in 2004, REPIC has been at the forefront of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) sector. As the producer compliance scheme (PCS) celebrates its 20th anniversary, it's an opportune moment to reflect on what has driven significant progress in its sustainability activities for its members.

Twenty years ago, REPIC emerged as a visionary initiative in the WEEE compliance sector; founded by producers for producers. Through pioneering solutions and robust partnerships, REPIC has consistently driven progress in sustainable compliance solutions for its members, setting a high standard for the industry. Collaboration has been a clear cornerstone of the scheme’s continued success and will remain the focus for the future as the sector strides toward achieving a truly circular economy.

The Power of Partnership

Going forward, REPIC's focus is on fostering even stronger collaborations; as greater emphasis is placed on moving towards the circular economy whilst the compliance sector continues to evolve to meet the growing demands of producers and their consumer’s needs.

Graeme Milne, Chief Executive of REPIC, adds: “We believe that by better understanding the needs, aspirations, and challenges across the sector, we can build deeper partnerships based on mutual respect and common objectives. Our goal is to create a future where producers and recyclers work closely together throughout the product life cycle, driving innovation and efficiency.”

REPIC will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a nine day cycling journey

REPIC is poised to seize the new opportunities to enhance and expand strategic partnerships across the sector. Building on this strong foundation, the PCS will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a nine day cycling journey, symbolising the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that has fuelled the success of REPIC.

The REPIC Two Decade Tour (TDT) will see cyclists pedal an incredible 565 miles from its headquarters in Bury, Greater Manchester to Brussels, the birthplace of the European Waste Electrical, Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

The TDT, departing on Thursday 13th June, will not only commemorate a remarkable milestone in the history of REPIC, but each stage of the journey will serve as a tribute to the collaborative progress made by the WEEE scheme’s producer members journey towards a circular economy.

The sector can follow the progress of the cyclists throughout the nine day event by visiting repic.co.uk for live updates and exclusive behind the scenes content.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
