Crews working on collection rounds for waste management company Biffa will tell their stories about dealing with aggressive members of the public in a two-part ITV series; ‘Britain sees red: caught on camera’, starting this evening.
The programme, produced by ITN, is due to air at 9pm tonight (23 July), with a concluding episode next week (30 July), and will feature several videos of Biffa employees being put in uncomfortable positions due to verbal and physical abuse directed towards them, as well as being subject other threats, such as dangerous driving.
A spokesman for Biffa’s Municipal division, said: “Our staff make around three million collections every week from nearly three million households, and clean many hundreds of miles of streets, roads and beaches.
“It’s commonly acknowledged as dangerous work – and it’s being made more dangerous by a really worrying increase in aggression towards our crews. They’re only trying to do the job that people want them to do.”
Attacks on waste operatives are not uncommon and Biffa crews have previously been featured on BBC TV programme The One Show.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
