The collaboration aims to enhance council recycling programs and improve household participation rates by sharing best practices and driving up kerbside collection rates.

Aluminium packaging recycling organisation, Alupro, has announced a partnership with the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee, LARAC, to boost recycling rates across UK councils.
The collaboration will enable Alupro to engage directly with LARAC members, providing guidance on aluminium packaging recycling best practices. The partnership includes regular content sharing through blogs, articles and advertorials on LARAC's website.
Tom Giddings, executive director of Alupro, said: "Through our proven engagement initiatives, such as MetalMatters, which has been rolled out by hundreds of councils since its launch in 2013, we aim to make recycling simple, accessible and digestible for householders."
The partnership builds on Alupro's MetalMatters program, which has demonstrated success in improving household recycling rates since 2013. These campaigns are based around a two phase leaflet drop to all households in the target area, reinforced by additional communications and messaging.
It will also aim to improve kerbside capture rates and material quality by working with local authorities, with the organisation aiming to achieve a 100 per cent recycling rate for aluminium packaging across the UK.
"Thanks to our funded programmes, we can help to positively influence community awareness around aluminium packaging recycling and drive widespread consumer engagement," Giddings added.
LARAC Executive Director Toni McNamara welcomed the partnership, stating: "LARAC is delighted to partner with Alupro to support local authorities in increasing aluminium packaging recycling rates. Councils play a crucial role in driving household recycling behaviour and, by working together, we can help provide them with the resources, guidance, and proven engagement initiatives to make a real impact."

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
