White Horse Recycling
Tom Parker | 13 September 2010

Vale of White Horse District Council have initiated a new recycling and refuse collection service. The project primarily aims to achieve greater service efficiency and cost savings in addition to the increased recycling rate of the County.

Over 200,000 recycling and refuse containers are being delivered to households by waste management company Verdant who have also been chosen to contract neighbouring South Oxfordshire District Council in a joint effort. The results from South Oxfordshire’s new service that has now been running for a year, saw recycling and composting rates increase from 38 per cent to 70 per cent and the same hopes to be achieved in Vale of White Horse.

Vale of White Horse’s executive member for waste services Jenny Hannaby praised the forthcoming project saying: “The new service will mean tonnes of Vale’s waste that currently ends up in landfill will either be recycled or composted. We look forward to seeing the new service start and our recycling rates increase.”

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
