Leatherhead Community Recycling Centre has officially reopened to the public, after having closed for refurbishment in January.
David Munro, Vice Chairman of Surrey County Council, declared the Randalls Road site open at an opening ceremony late last month (22 November), with doors opening to the public the following day.
SITA Surrey, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SITA UK, redeveloped the site on behalf of Surrey County Council with the aim of providing a ‘modern, accessible and easy to use facility’.
Building work to improve the centre took ten months to complete and cost a reported £2.7 million. Improvements to the recycling centre included:
Beverly Sheridan, project manager at SITA Surrey, commented: “I’m delighted to say that the improved and extended Leatherhead Community Recycling Centre is now open to the public. I would like to thank residents for their patience while the site was redeveloped and I hope you agree that the new facility was worth the wait”.
During the winter the centre is open between 8am to 4:15pm from Monday to Friday and 9am to 4:15pm at the weekend.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?
There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
