Novelis to supply Jaguar Land Rover aluminium
Kate Hacker | 12 September 2012

Aluminium recycling company, Novelis, has signed a multi-year agreement to be the sole supplier of rolled aluminium to Jaguar Land Rover, and will implement a closed-loop recycling system.

In efforts to reduce vehicle weight, and thus CO2 emissions, Jaguar Land Rover will employ rolled aluminium from Novelis, the world's leading producer of the material. Novelis will also recover and recycle scrap aluminium from the automaker in an effort to create a closed-loop recycling system.

This system will play a role in Novelis' long-term goal of achieving 80 per cent recycled aluminium input by 2020. The company has already begun moving towards the goal, after increasing from 33 to 39 per cent recycled input between the 2011 and 2012 fiscal years.

"Novelis' superior innovation capabilities, technology expertise and global investment strategy for delivering high-quality aluminium sheet make the company an ideal long-term partner for our own sustainable growth strategy", said Mike Brown, Senior Purchasing Manager for Jaguar Land Rover.

"Novelis shares Jaguar Land Rover's goal of achieving the highest life-cycle sustainability and recycled content targets."

The two companies have a history of working closely together in the development of lightweight aluminium technologies for automobiles.

Acknowledging Novelis' and Jaguar Land Rover's shared sustainability goals, Roland Harings, Vice President of Global Automotive for Novelis, said:

"Novelis' ability to deliver a secure supply of aluminium sheet will enable Jaguar Land Rover to meet the growing demand from its customers worldwide for lighter vehicles and improved fuel economy. This close partnership reflects the aligned growth paths of both companies in reaching our respective sustainability goals, due to our collaboration on a proven closed-loop aluminium recycling system."

Novelis plans to more than double its capacity to meet growing global automotive demand.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
