Final phase of Angus recycling change to begin
Annie Kane | 9 October 2014

Angus Council is to implement the final stage of its recycling system changeover later this month, when Montrose and Brechin residents become the last householders to receive the new service.

Letters about the new system and the new bin collection calendars are currently being issued to households, and the new bins will be delivered over a four-week period starting on 20 October.

The first collections using the new system will start in the Brechin/Edzell area on 27 October.

Recycling system details

The new kerbside recycling service first rolled out in February, and saw residents of Arbroath and Carnoustie receive less frequent waste collections, and more recycling capacity. (Forfar, Kirriemuir and those living in surrounding areas received the service in summer.)

Previously, the majority of householders (excluding around 6,000 rural residents) received weekly collections of general waste in a 240-litre grey bin, along with weekly collections of dry recyclables in a green box, and fortnightly collections of garden waste in a green wheelie bin.

However, under the new service residents receive fortnightly collections of general waste (in a new, smaller, purple bin), and fortnightly collections of co-mingled dry recyclables (in the old, grey bin).

Green waste will continue to be collected on a fortnightly basis in the green wheelie bin.

A weekly food waste collection, using both indoor and outdoor caddies, has also been introduced.

The council hopes the service change will 'make it easier for residents to recycle more materials at home' and help achieve a 60 per cent recycling target by 2020.

Those looking to find out more about how the system works are invited to attend roadshows being held in the libraries and ACCESS offices in Brechin and Montrose this week.

The roadshows are taking place between 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2pm – 4pm at the following venues:

  • 13 - 14 October: Co-op, Trinity Road, Brechin
  • 15 October: Tesco, Western Road, Montrose
  • 16 October: Co-op, Basin View, Montrose
  • 17 October: Tesco, Western Road, Montrose.

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
