Sweet talk

What makes a good on-street municipal bin? Prime location? Sure. Emptied often enough to prevent overflowing? Of course. Ability to speak? Perhaps not.

Well, some lucky Londoners and Liverpudlians will soon be able to have a good old chat with their bins. As part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live campaign, various stars have recorded songs or messages of encouragement to be played when a piece of litter is successfully thrown out. Actress Amanda Holden enthuses, “Yes! Do that again!”; former cricketer Phil Tufnell shouts, “Howzat!”; and Mike McCartney (pictured) has recorded a re-worded version of Scaffold’s hit ‘Thank You Very Much’, with the new lyrics, “Thank you very much for binning your litter.”

Recycle for a song? Of course!

How will the government and DMOs address the challenges of including glass in DRS while ensuring a level playing field across the UK?

User Avatar

There's no easy solution to include glass in the DRS while maintaining a level playing field. Potential approaches include a phased introduction of glass, potentially with higher deposits to reflect its logistical challenges. The government and DMOs could incentivise innovation in glass packaging design and subsidise dedicated return points for glass-handling. Exemptions for smaller businesses unable to handle glass might also be necessary. Any successful solution will likely blend several approaches. It must address the differing priorities of devolved administrations, balance environmental benefits with logistical and cost implications, and be supported by robust consumer education campaigns emphasizing the importance of glass recycling.
